Abstract
βThe positive effects of surprise have been studied in learning and in the game industry. This study focused on how surprise can be added to learning through gamification. The study was conducted using Seppo, a gamified learning platform. Gamification and educational experts were interviewed for supplying ideas for the design. The design of the mechanisms was further supported by a gamification workshop. Based on the results, three randomization mechanisms were developed. The mechanisms were tested with potential users concerning intuitiveness, clearness, visuality, suitability for learning, and fun. The most appealing mechanism was the wheel of fortune, whilst the die mechanism was the least appealing. Instructor motivation emerged as a new observation. The results of this study supported the interpretation that surprise is a factor in both learner motivation and engagement in games.β
