Summary
"It's not every day that high school students get to make their own video games with the help of professionals in the gaming and tech industry.
High school students in East Baton Rouge Parish will be awarded that opportunity with the introduction of a new after-school game design program offered by Southern University.
The Southern University Law Center's Mixed Reality Virtual Innovation Gaming and Esports Institute has partnered with Urban Arts, a non-profit focused on teaching digital game design to students from underrepresented communities.
Using one of the foremost game design engines, a program called Unity, students will be able to learn how to design video games and eventually make their own game.
"There are so many other variables if you learn the platform itself that you can go into different industries. The gaming portion is just the chocolate over the broccoli approach for me." Based in New York, Urban Arts will work with students at the Esports Institute remotely on Wednesdays and Fridays.
" Kyle Davis, a junior at the Southern University Lab School who is also in the after-school game design program, shared his desire to gain skills that could help him earn a well-paying computer science job once he graduates.
With the lab offering an Esports law and management course separate from the Urban Arts partnership, Turner said he's "really excited" to see what the collaboration can accomplish for dozens of prospective game designers across the parish."
