Summary
The effectiveness of game-based learning in organizational training is affirmed by recent research, countering criticism that training platforms are mere distractions. Gamified training platforms are gaining popularity globally, with traditional methods losing appeal. KPMG, for instance, acknowledged that conventional content-sharing methods were unengaging, prompting the launch of a gamified learning app called KPMG Globerunner. This app, a single-player game, challenges users to race around the world, testing their knowledge of the firm's services. Results from its implementation indicate a significant reduction in knowledge gaps and increased positive feelings towards the organization among participants. The benefits include a 35.8% increase in fees collected, a 16.3% rise in clients, and a 22.3% increase in opportunities from new clients.
Furthermore, a 2022 study on KPMG's Globerunner revealed that the use of gamified training platforms positively influences office performance, though results may take time to manifest. Leadership participation is also identified as a factor impacting effectiveness. While game-based learning is seen as a valuable tool to engage individuals and achieve organizational objectives, it is not considered a one-size-fits-all solution. According to Chris Shuster, the Director of KPMG Learning and Development Advisory at the time, gamification should be viewed as one tool among many in a comprehensive, organization-wide learning and training program.
