Summary

The Ministry of Education, Technological & Vocational Training & National Transformation Initiative (NTI) launched the STARR ADVENTURES Civics and Citizenship e-Learning Game as part of a national transformation of the educational system. NTI Director Dr Allyson Leacock highlighted that Phase One focuses on Class One, with the goal of incorporating Civics and Citizenship into STARR Adventures for all primary school classes. The project, challenging and transformative, was made possible through collaboration with Prime Minister Mia Mottley and the Ministry of Education, led by Hon Kay McConney. Special recognition was given to key individuals, including Shanelle Waithe and Neil Sorhaindo, as well as the creative team from THE EMPIRE and Dr Nicholas Brancker, who contributed to the game's development.

Focus groups, including 8-11-year-olds, teachers, and parents, participated in BETA testing, receiving positive feedback. Shanelle Waithe, now Deputy Principal at Lodge School, expressed excitement about the game's potential and likened it to world-class educational games. Neil Sorhaindo emphasized the positive impact the game could have on students and teachers. Minister of Education Kay McConney introduced the concept of "Operation Enjoy Learning," emphasizing the gamified version's role in transforming education. The gamification aligns with the trend of children engaging with educational games on digital devices. McConney highlighted the game's safety and educational value, being a 100% Bajan creation vetted by teachers and students.

Domini Gaskin, a student and BETA tester, praised the game's interactivity, competitiveness, and the combination of fun and learning. Dr Ramona Archer-Bradshaw, Chief Education Officer, emphasized collaboration and cooperation as the future of a transformed education system, endorsing the idea that the game, created by Bajans for Bajans, promotes a deeper understanding of being a Bajan. The STARR Adventures Civics and Citizenship e-Learning Game is set to be available in primary schools across Barbados in the upcoming week.
