Who is the IDEAL Tabletop Player?

Who is the IDEAL Tabletop Player?

My name is Dave Eng, and I’m an educator, designer, and researcher focusing on applied games for teaching, training, and learning.  I publish most of my work at www.universityxp.com. Specifically, I focus on tabletop games for teaching and learning.

I am currently working on a new article titled:

“What makes the IDEAL tabletop player?”

I learn, play, and host tabletop games regularly. I have a group that I play with consistently. Members in my regular group include seasoned Eurogame hobbyists; experienced board gamers; and entry level players.

I’ve hosted and taught a vast variety of different tabletop games over the years. I’ve participated in tournaments and have dropped into endless casual board game gatherings.

Over time I’ve noticed some things throughout these different venues that make the “ideal” tabletop player.

A saying that I like to use when explaining this to others is:

“Be easy to play with and hard to play against.”

This means that you’re easy to play with because you listen to the rules and pay attention to the game state when it’s not your turn. You’re hard to play against because you play to the best of your ability within the expectations of the game.

I’d like to share more on this concept as well as the insights gained from the tabletop community. I would like to gain those insights from you through the completion of this short anonymous survey below.

The survey has a total of FIVE (5x) questions broken down into what “good” tabletop players do and what “bad” players do.

GOOD tabletop players are those who create a positive experience for all involved. Conversely, BAD tabletop players create a negative experience.

Here are the questions listed on the survey form

1.    What is ONE thing that GOOD tabletop players DO?
2.    What is ONE thing that GOOD tabletop players AVOID DOING?
3.    What is ONE thing that BAD tabletop players DO?
4.    What is ONE thing that BAD tabletop players AVOID DOING?
5.    Additional Comments
