Summary

Elizabeth Magie invented The Landlord's Game in 1904 as a critique of monopolists and economic inequality, inspired by the ideas of reformer Henry George. Magie, a progressive advocate for women’s rights and land tax reform, designed the game to highlight issues like land-grabbing. Though originally marketed to promote Georgist principles, the game became widely popular, with players creating their own versions. In the 1930s, game developer Charles Darrow adapted it into Monopoly, eventually selling the rights to Parker Brothers. Magie’s role remained unrecognized for decades until a 1973 lawsuit revealed her contribution to the iconic game.
