Summary
The study in the Circulation journal examined the impact of gamification and financial incentives on physical activity in individuals at risk of cardiovascular events. By employing behavioral economic concepts, shorter-term analyses demonstrated increased physical activity in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. However, the long-term effects of these interventions remained uncertain. The randomized controlled trial, conducted from May 2019 to January 2024, evaluated the efficacy of financial incentives, gamification, or both in improving physical activity over time. Results showed significant improvements in physical activity, sustained even after the intervention, suggesting these strategies could aid in mitigating cardiovascular risks.
