Summary
At the end of the spring semester, two courses—WLLC 398V Videogames and Human Agency and JWST 470/570V Special Topics in Jewish Studies—converged to explore the impact of Germany's Nazi past on the arts, focusing on videogames and censorship. Curtis Maughan, a teaching assistant professor of digital humanities, and Jennifer Hoyer, an associate professor of German, led a joint class session. Maughan discussed four videogames—Bundesfighter II, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, Attentat 1942, and Through the Darkest of Times—examining their portrayal of Nazi symbols under Germany's legal framework. Students debated the ethical complexities of games dealing with traumatic historical themes, influenced by their engagement with Through the Darkest of Times and insights from game designer Mona Brandt of Paintbucket Games.
