Summary
When we picture "Hanging out with friends," few people imagine a guy hunched over the keyboard of his souped-up computer, immersed in an online game.
There's evidence that building relationships in online games is linked to depression, especially for men who are socially isolated in real life.
That in fact, online gaming communities can provide vital social support for men.
Of course, more research is required before declaring online games a solution to the mental health crisis.
By thoughtfully designing games and their communities, we may be able to provide men a crucial alternative space - a place where they can voice struggles, realize they are not alone and receive understanding that they hesitate to seek elsewhere.
So: How can we harness online gaming's social potential while minimizing its harm to vulnerable individuals?
Maybe health professionals could partner with gaming communities, promoting mental health in a less stigmatized space.
