Summary

The highest-grossing film to date is 2019's Avengers: Endgame, which took in $2.79 billion.

That's still way behind the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V, which has made more than $6 billion.

The big sums travel back into the games: Cyberpunk 2077, which came out last year, cost a staggering $317 million to develop; a superhero blockbuster, about $200 million.

Despite gaming's obvious successes, a barrier has always seemed to exist between the millions playing games and the millions attracted to "Serious" culture, even if sometimes the same people were enjoying both.

The barrier is coming down at key points now, helped by a rise in gaming during lockdown and in big brands and even politicians using.
