Summary

In Bryan McKenzie’s science classes at Chagrin Falls Intermediate School, fifth-graders have integrated board game creation into their learning. Responding to a challenge from Hasbro, students designed both traditional and electronic games to reinforce science concepts ahead of Ohio State Tests. Emphasizing cognitive and social benefits identified by the National Institute of Health and Harvard University, McKenzie highlights how game design enhances creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Using Chromebooks, science texts, and art supplies, teams crafted games featuring boards, pieces, instructions, and questions aligned with Bloom’s Taxonomy. McKenzie anticipates sustained classroom integration of board game development as a valuable educational tool.
